Zaanstad (population: 139,774 in 2004) is a municipality in the north-western Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. The municipality covers an area of 83.04 kmē (of which 8.79 kmē is water). Zaanstad was the first industrial city of Europe. The municipality of Zaanstad consists the following towns, villages and townships: Assendelft, Koog aan de Zaan, Krommenie, Westzaan, Wormerveer, Zaandam, and Zaandijk.
